Buying a home is a major and daunting step for nearly everyone, and can be even more rattling for first-timers. For all buyers, the purchase involves the investment of a great deal of money. For the novice, it is the entry into a whole new world of cash management and behavior.

"Home ownership is not for everyone," warns Greg Herb, regional vice president of the National Association of Realtors. He is located in the Philadelphia area and works in the Pennsylvania, New York and New Jersey markets.
